"You work for the library? Must be nice to just read books all day."
I've heard that so many times and it's just not true! We are too busy working to read. But I love to hit the library on my day off to check out a nice big pile of fun books and movies.
Then I go home, fire up some popcorn, and party down!
As promised last month, here is Oculus!! A sister and brother try to outsmart a haunted mirror in the present and in the past. Is it really a haunted mirror, or is everyone deluding themselves? Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) shines here as the smart, protective big sister I’d want in my corner when things go sideways. This stylish film is spooky, violent, and disturbing. I loved it! Ten shrieks out of ten. Rated R.
This gorgeous book is bursting with storm photography by European meteorologists who come to the U.S.A. every year for a little storm chasing in the Great Plains. Enjoy the thrilling full-color pictures, read the fascinating descriptions, and even work on your German language skills! That’s right, this book is bilingual: German text with English translation below.
Staubsturm mit himmlischem funken!
Margo Thinks Twice by Monica Arnaldo
“Margo woke up early one Saturday with an urge to create…” It me!!! This book is about a cute little girl with a big imagination. She worries about a great many things, but it all turns out just fine.
When I wake up with an urge to create, I often turn to cooking. This book is full of delicious-looking recipes. I mean, just look at that cover! That’s the Layered Ham and Cheese Croissant Casserole, which I had to make for research purposes. I can confirm that it was easy to make, and everyone who tried it loved it. Other offerings include Cinnamon Roll Casserole, Potato Chip and Chicken Casserole, Pierogi Casserole, and much more. Two forks up!
Released in 1987, Creepshow 2 is in some ways a time capsule. On the one hand, there are young athletic men running around in tiny swimsuits, the camera lingering on their glistening bodies in a way that is almost never seen in movies of today. On the other hand, there is a distinct whiff of Eau de Racism that we’d be better off without.
Creepshow 2 is composed of three Stephen King stories, loosely linked together by brief animated interludes. The final story, The Hitch-Hiker, has a complex protagonist played by the always brilliant Lois Chiles (Moonraker, Death on the Nile). The story has problematic elements, but Chiles flings herself into her role with such passionate commitment that I am recommending this film, with caution. The cast also includes Tom Savini, Dorothy Lamour, and George Kennedy -- and a fun little Stephen King cameo. Rated R.
