I’ll Take Metadiscourse for $800, Alex

cat reading a book

It’s often been said (by me) that the hardest part of writing one of these blog posts is cranking out a good introductory paragraph. Ideally, it would introduce a theme that ties the whole list together. Depending on who’s writing, a joke might be cracked or a heartfelt sentiment shared. And then we would gracefully segue into the part where the books go. Anyway, here are some of the great things you can check out at the library!

Arne & Carlos Field Guide to Knitted Birds : Over 40 Handmade Projects to Liven Up Your Roost book cover

Arne & Carlos Field Guide to Knitted Birds: Over 40 Handmade Projects to Liven Up Your Roost by Arne Nerjordet

The other day I was in the park minding my own business when I caught a yarny blur in my peripheral vision. It landed right next to me and I realized it was a knitted bird! I needed to identify it for my knitted birdwatching club. That’s where this book comes in.

Hahaha okay, fine, it’s a book of patterns. Adorable patterns! Learn how to knit a basic bird and stop there, or go deeper and adorn your creations with embroidery, tail feathers, jewels – the sky is the limit. There is even a whole chapter of Birds In Traditional Sweaters! And a pattern for a teapot cozy with a cunning little robin perched on top! Gift giving season is fast approaching -- why not knit a whole flock of charming birds in tiny winter hats? Fully illustrated with tremendous photographs. Of knitted birds!

NXT : The Future is Now book cover

NXT: The Future is Now by Jon Robinson

Imagine it’s Tuesday night, and you’re just casually watching WWE SmackDown, perhaps enjoying a snack. Everything is fine. But suddenly! Unfamiliar music hits! The crowd is on its feet and everyone is jumping around and yelling and generally losing their minds! And… some dude you’ve never seen in your entire life comes out, strides to the ring, and cuts a promo which you do not understand one bit, but that clearly resonates with the audience. You feel sad and left out. Your nachos congeal and your beverage is flat. This heartbreaking scene happens all across our great land far too often.

Your library to the rescue! We have a great book here that can end your confusion and sadness! Learn about Kevin Owens, Finn Balor, Bayley, and so many more former NXT wrestlers who are now on the main roster. Marvel at their pictures and delight in their backstories. It’s a great way to get caught up on new faces without watching hours and hours of old NXT, although really… go watch some old NXT too. It’s my favorite thing.

Text, Don't Call : an Illustrated Guide to the Introverted Life book cover

Text, Don't Call : an Illustrated Guide to the Introverted Life by Aaron T. Caycedo-Kimura

Internet-famous INFJoe has published a cute little cartoon book! Relatable for introverts and educational for extroverts, Text, Don’t Call made me snicker quietly to myself in my room.

Before I Fall (DVD) cover

Before I Fall (DVD)

What if you died in a car crash, and then woke up in your own bed the morning of the previous day? And what if it kept happening, over and over and over? Would you try to change things? Would you just go off the deep end? Doesn't it all just sound exhausting? Good thing it's happening to Sam, and not us! Sam and her best friends are for the most part aggressively shallow, careless, and mean. The clique leader is a walking duckface selfie with a chip on her shoulder the size of a 2 x 4. But the girls genuinely care for and support each other, and the movie is watchable and engrossing. Zoey Deutch, as Sam, turns in a very nice performance as she carries the film on her relatable shoulders.

Teenage Groundhog Day contains underage drinking, mature themes, bad words, and dying a whole bunch o' times. And be sure to check out the book by Lauren Oliver. I especially like the audiobook, narrated by Sarah Drew of Grey's Anatomy.
